History

In 1999, Phil and Nancy Shapiro embarked on their vision to create a community for active seniors unlike any other in the United States. With the completion of 8 senior’s communities over the past 18 years, and the Shapiro's consulting practices in senior living, nutrition, and wellness, they’ve learned so much about what’s really important. This was the foundation for creating the architecture and lifestyles programming that makes Promenade a very special place to live and make new friends.

Promenade's neighborhood is filled with rich history. Some of the most influential people in Nevada's history once lived in the Newlands neighborhood on Court Street. George Wingfield, a familiar name in Reno, donated the land that would later become Wingfield Park to the City of Reno. This downtown river park is one of the vistas seen from Promenade balconies. Other notable residents included Henry Gosse, who helped make downtown Reno a tourism favorite in the early 1900s, and of course, the neighborhood's namesake, Senator Francis G. Newlands, who represented Nevada in the Senate in the early 1900s.
